Languages in Dalleth

Every character in Dalleth starts the game with two automatic languages, common and a racial language. In addition, any of the languages described here are available as bonus languages when the racial language is normally available, at the DM's discretion.

Common

Several regions of the world have little contact with one another. Thus, several different common trading languages have developed. Based on their region of origin, players should choose an appropriate languagle from the following list. Note that not everyone knows a trade language - only people who have reason to communicate with a broad array of travellers, such as merchants and adventurers, are likely to know their region's common trading language.

Sormian (Kumara, Arrudia, Sylanta, Zettara)
Skaal (The Sunless Lands)
Aquan (all underwater)
Trade (Mi'id)

Racial Languages

Some races only have a single version of their language - their peoples are long-lived enough that little regional variaton occurs. However, even among the long-lived races, extreme isolation can cause languages to drift apart. Each race listed below has multiple dialects from which to choose. Some of these may be mutually intelligible - if so, this is noted.

Humans

Human language has diverged significantly over time. The following human languages exist:

Arrudian
Zettaran
Darakkan
Sylantan
Kumaran
Mi'idan

Sylvan Elves

The Sylvan elves have developed three major dialects, though they are all mutually intelligible to some degree:

Ledaran Sylvan (spoken in Arrudia)
Zettaran Sylvan
Sylantan Sylvan

Gnomes

Gnomish communities are typically very closed, mistrusting even other gnomes when they are outsiders. As a result, gnomish enclaves have formed distinct, mutually unintelligible languages. These languages are:

Gelmian gnomish
Mi'idan gnomish
(more... not yet detailed)

Halflings

As natural wanderers, halflings have always kept some amount of contact with their kin. There are only two disparate halfling languages:

Mi'idan halfling
Sormian halfling

Orcs

Orcs have a large number of mutually intelligible dialects. Every orc tribe speaks a slightly varied language, but the lorekeepers and shamans have held on to the fundaments of the language so that orcs are never completely estranged from one another in times of crisis. The most well-known orcish dialect is Malekai, as the Malekai Nation is the largest orc tribe in Arrudia. Malekai is the language most likely to be chosen by a player starting in Arrudia.

Dragons

The younger dragons now speak a language estranged from the original dragons. Low Draconic, the newer language, is far less powerful than that of High Draconic, the language of the ancients. High Draconic is not available as a bonus language without DM approval, as it is known by very few among the lesser races.
