Time

The intelligent beings of Dalleth have created a Solar Calendar that separates the year into eight months of six weeks each. A week consists of 5 days, the latter two of which are the weekend. The days are named Fredas, Surion, Meleth, Temachus, and Weren.

The elves insist that it is the Fifth Era of the World, and that cataclysms have remade the world four times before. Whether or not this is true, it is certain at least that no memories extend much beyond 1300 years: recorded histories are scarce at best, and the stories that have survived have been exaggerated to epic proportions.  Suffice it to say that the current recorded history began almost 1300 years ago.

The March of the Year

There are eight months in the Arrudian calendar, which is used in most of the known world.  The months are:

Vennas, which marks the beginning of Winter
Muran, the coldest month
Mira, when new life appears
Lightis, when flowers bloom
Nill, start of Summer
Serrenad, the month of longest light
Varkeye, which brings chill to the air
Budsand, the month of slumber and dying

Astronomically, the moon of Dalleth is very orderly.  There are an equal number of solar and lunar months; the 15th of each month marks the full moon, and the 30th of each month marks the dark moon.  It is said that the moon was irregular in the time before the Turmoil, but that the catastrophic events that occurred then reshaped the heavens, and aligned the sun and moon.

Holidays

There are a number of commonly held holidays.  These are celebrated wherever the Gods known to Arrudia are worshipped.  Some of them (especially the solar holidays) are known by different names in other lands as well.

Vennas 1 - Winter's Falling - The first day of Winter.
Mira 1 - New Life - The first day of Spring.
Mira 8 - Day of Journeys - Considered an auspicious day to begin travels.  Holy day of Saekan.
Nill 1 - Nilldance - First day of summer.
Serrenad 2 - The Day of Ascension - Day that the Gods arose in Varealm.  The traditional day for crowning new kings in many kingdoms.
Varkeye 1 - Reaping - First day of autumn and beginning of the harvest.
